Andrea Bianchi, known as “Vespino”, was a professional painter who worked in Milan in the late Cinquecento and in the first three decades of the Seicento. He was the favourite artist of Cardinal Federico Borromeo, who commissioned him to make a number of copies of great Renaissance masterpieces, and of works by Leonardo da Vinci in particular. This was so that a reliable record would remain, especially when there were fears that the original might one day be lost. The best example of this is the copy of The Last Supper, on which Vespino worked from 1611 to 1616.
