Traditionally considered to be by the hand of the great neoclassical sculptor Antonio Canova himself, it has however recently been attributed to Giovanni Battista Monti, one of his talented assistants. The statue, of semi-colossal proportions, takes inspiration from the idealised, heroic models of classical antiquity.
