This panel, attributed to the so-called “Master of the Dormitio Virginis Massari”, who worked in Ferrara in the late fifteenth century, shows the Virgin sleeping the sleep of death (the origin of the traditional term “dormition”) and her assumption into glory, as narrated in the Apocryphal Gospels and adopted into the tradition of the Eastern Churches.
