Accademia

A crossroads of study and dialogue

The Accademia Ambrosiana is the most recent heir to Federico Borromeo’s far-sighted project, as it was
established by Cardinal Dionigi Tettamanzi, with the approval of its new Statute on 20 March 2008.
Coordinated by a Board of Fellows (Collegio dei Dottori), its purpose is to raise the Ambrosiana to the level of an Agora, a place devoted to fostering the dialogue between diverse peoples and heterogeneous cultures, a crossroads between North and South, East and West.
The Academicians are engaged in the study, conservation and promotion of the extraordinary cultural
heritage of the Ambrosiana by means of conferences (the Dies Accademici), publications and exchanges, whose aim is to establish a scholarly community at an international level.

Accademia

The awareness of the Founder and of the long line of ensuing Fellows of the Ambrosiana that they are
always in search of Truth and Beauty corresponds perfectly and surprisingly to today’s necessities. The
Accademia Ambrosiana accepts this legacy and unites in its Statute the two previous academies, namely
the Accademia di San Carlo Borromeo and the Accademia di Sant’Ambrogio.
The Accademia Ambrosiana consists of eight classes of study:
Class of Borromean Studies
Class of Ambrosian Studies
Class of Greek and Latin Studies
Class of Italian Studies
Class of Slav Studies
Class of Far Eastern Studies
Class of Near Eastern Studies
Class of Studies of the Literatures and Cultures of Africa.
