JEWELS OF GIULIO MANFREDI CELEBRATE RAPHAEL
SCHOOL OF LIGHT

From September 16, 2022, the Room of the Raphael Cartoon hosts the exihbition “Jewels by Giulio Manfredi celebrate Raphael. School of Light” curated by Alberto Rocca and Arnaldo Colasanti. The installation is composed of twenty-one refined jewels, corresponding to twenty-one characters from Raphael’s cartoon, demonstrating that “the cartoon still inspires the those who let themselves be provoked by such haughty beauty”.

The contemplation of the Raphael cartoon inspired Giulio Manfredi to confront himself with one of the greatest masters of the Renaissance and with “l’un des plus beaux desseins du monde, as Pierre Gauthiez put it,” says Mgr. Alberto Rocca, Director of the Pinacoteca Ambrosiana.

Giulio Manfredi recreates the dazzling secret of Raphael’s masterpiece in jewels and precious stones, as a gesture of admiration and love. His research, the awareness with which he experiments with matter and form, are the trace of a precious dream, where the legacy of Humanism is nothing more than the gaze turned towards new and contemporary beauty. The Veneranda Biblioteca Ambrosiana chooses the work of master Giulio Manfredi because it believes that the Italian genius is always a vocation for research and beauty.
