Marco Mantovani Foundation

The Marco Mantovani Foundation, established in 1994 and recognized by the Lombardy Region, seeks
to preserve and enhance the works of the sculptor Marco Mantovani, as evidence of the life of an artist dedicated to sculpture and art.

With a gesture of generous patronage, in 2000 Marco Mantovani decided to donate his substantial estate to the Ambrosiana, with a rich art collection including more than 150 works in bronze, plaster and terracotta created between the 1970s and 90s. He entrusted the Ambrosiana with responsibility for his foundation, showing he had a strong civic sense and was intimately devoted to those artistic and cultural ideals that four centuries ago Federico Borromeo had set out as the program of the Ambrosiana, making it a centre for artists in search of beauty, understood as an admirable means of evangelisation.

The Artist
Marco Mantovani was introduced to art by Ludovico Pogliaghi, who in wartime accepted him into his studio on the Sacro Monte of Varese. Mantovani then studied in courses at the Accademia di Brera under the teachers Francesco Messina and Giacomo Manzù.
He also had another great teacher, Giannino Castiglioni, with whom he specialised in sculpture and drawing.
An internationally renowned sculptor, Marco Mantovani played an active part in cultural developments on entering the Neo-Illuminist movement.
